About the Institute
The Geographical Institute was founded in 1946 by the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 1976 it was named after Slovenia’s greatest geographer, academy member Anton Melik (1890–1966). It hosts seven departments, a library, and a museum. The institute mainly deals with geographical research on Slovenia, prepares basic geographical texts about Slovenia, leads Slovenian and international projects, holds conferences, publishes a journal and several book series, trains junior researchers, exchanges researchers, and collaborates with universities.
