Jernej Tiran is a researcher at the Anton Melik Geographical Institute of the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, where he conducts research in various fields of human geography, particularly electoral geography, transport and mobility, urban geography, and sports and recreation. He received his doctorate in the interdisciplinary study program Humanities and Social Sciences at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana. His work mainly focuses on identifying spatial differences and inequalities and searching for their causes – for example, in the context of political participation, accessibility of services, or sports and recreational activities. In his research, he often relies on statistical analyses and cartographic representations, which he frequently shares with the wider public. He is also the editor of numerous institute publications and is actively involved in geographic professional associations.
Jernej Tiran's research work covers three separate areas within human geography: political geography with an emphasis on spatial differences in voting behavior, quality of life and mobility with an emphasis on spatial accessibility of services, and geographical aspects of sports and recreation.
His research is mostly based on quantitative methods: surveys, statistical analyses, geographic information systems, and cartographic representations. He often uses innovative and interactive tools such as visual stories and online atlases to present his results.
His most important achievements include original scientific articles published in prestigious journals such as Urban Research and Practice, City, Culture and Society, and Innovation, and (co-)authorship of several scientific monographs published by ZRC Publishing. Also worth mentioning are his comments on elections and referendums, which he publishes together with maps on social networks and in major media outlets, while his in-depth analyses are published on the Metina lista web portal.
In the future, he plans to focus primarily on the geography of sports and recreation, a hitherto neglected but promising field of research.
