Towards a Mediterranean model of Regenerative Tourism as Climate Change adaptation and risk prevention (Regenera4MED)

Description

Regenera4MED

Regenera4MED is a 33-month Interreg Euro-MED project co-funded under the Programme’s Mission “Enhancing Sustainable Tourism” with a budget of 2.442.612,50 euros.

Led by a coalition of Mediterranean partners, including Catalonia, Liguria, Abruzzo, Crete, Corsica, and Split Dalmatia, this project will pioneer a new regenerative tourism model that aims to go beyond sustainability, actively restoring and enhancing environmental, cultural, and community values. With the Mediterranean being a major global tourism hub, the project will involve multiple stakeholders, including local communities, public authorities, SMEs, academia, and environmental organizations, working together through a 5-Helix governance model.

The project will focus on three main elements:
1.    Regenerative Tourism Model – Testing and operationalizing a new regenerative tourism model in six pilot regions to promote climate change adaptation, resilience, and positive environmental impact.
2.    Regenerative Experiences – Developing and testing regenerative tourism experiences to create sustainable travel options that strengthen local economies and preserve local heritage and culture.
3.    Knowledge and Tools – Creating tools for self-evaluation, including the RISET digital tool, and producing the Regenera4MED Blue Print to ensure the scalability of the project’s outcomes.

As a key partner in the Regenera4MED project, ZRC SAZU leads the conceptual foundation of the initiative by defining and researching regenerative tourism. As coordinator of the Blueprint development phase, ZRC SAZU is responsible for conceptualisation, inventory of best practices, and the creation of tools and training programmes for tourism stakeholders. The institute also contributes to governance model development, capacity building, and evaluation processes, and plays an active role in communication and dissemination activities.

Project 80% co-financed by the EU.
