Geographical Indications and Sustainable Rural Development: A Comparative Analysis of Three Case Studies in Slovenia

Description

Purpose and Objectives of the Project

Geographical Indications (GIs) are intrinsically linked to the quality and reputation of products originating from specific regions. They represent a unique form of intellectual property that certifies the product’s origin from a particular area and highlights its quality or specific characteristics associated with that location.

The key elements of Geographical Indications are:

  1. Place-based Name: A unique name that connects the product to its geographical origin.
  2. Production Guidelines (Product Specification): Clearly defined methods and production standards that ensure consistent quality.
  3. Exclusive Right to Use: Only producers within the designated area have the right to use the GI, which guarantees the product’s authenticity and integrity.

Despite the important role of GIs in preserving local economies, traditions, and fostering innovative opportunities, their impact on rural development—particularly in post-socialist EU countries—remains insufficiently researched.

The purpose of this project is to examine how PDO-type GIs (Protected Designations of Origin) can contribute to the sustainable development of rural areas. The project focuses on three Slovenian PDO-protected cheeses: Bovec cheese, Tolminc cheese, and Mohant cheese, which face various challenges in their development and management.

The main goal of the project is to evaluate and compare the development of PDO-type GIs in Slovenia and investigate their contribution to sustainable rural development. Particular attention will be given to the role of stakeholders, local community dynamics, and institutional support. The project aims to provide insights into the management of PDO-type GIs and offer practical suggestions to improve existing systems.

Key Research Questions

  • How can PDO-type GIs more effectively contribute to sustainable rural development?
  • What role do stakeholders, particularly producers, play in the development and management of PDO-type GIs?
  • How can governance structures for PDO-type GIs be improved to enhance their impact on local communities?
  • What challenges do PDO-type GIs face in Slovenia, and how can these be successfully addressed?

Research Context and Opportunities

Slovenia, as a relatively new EU member state, still faces challenges in the effective implementation of PDO-type GIs. Previous studies have shown that some PDO-type GIs in Slovenia are inactive, while others include only a small number of producers. This project builds on existing research into Bovec cheese, Tolminc cheese, and Mohant cheese, which have already been studied in terms of their historical development and marketing. This forms an excellent foundation for deepening the understanding of the role of these Geographical Indications in rural development.
