First, a draft list of geographical names was prepared for the planned map and updated with proposed solutions to a number of editing issues. In line with the available resources and the guidelines of the Slovenian government’s Commission for the Standardization of Geographical Names, geographical names inside Slovenia and neighboring Austria, Italy, Croatia, and Hungary were reviewed for the accuracy and suitability of their written forms. In addition to the proposed editing changes and improvements, a list of comments with more than 600 proposed improvements was prepared, and the final corrections were made. Special attention was directed towards systematic representation of the names of a large majority of Slovenian natural and historical landscapes. Meanwhile, the Slovenian government’s Commission for the Standardization of Geographical Names standardized all the geographical names in Slovenia.
The 1:250,000 Državna pregledna karta Republike Slovenije (National Large-Scale Map of the Republic of Slovenia) with standardized Slovenian geographical names was published in the fall of 2008 after several years of efforts. It was produced by the Surveying and Mapping Institute of Slovenia and published by the Surveying and Mapping Authority of the Republic of Slovenia on behalf of the Slovenian government’s Commission for the Standardization of Geographical Names. A list of all geographical names entered on the map and the coordinates and quadrants in which they appear are provided on the back of the map.
