Interreg Euro-MED project Regenera4MED
- Barcelona hosted the project’s inaugural meeting on June 17 and 18, featuring a keynote lecture by Anna Pollock, a renowned international expert in regenerative tourism.
- The project brings together partners from six Mediterranean regions to develop a new vision of regenerative tourism that goes beyond sustainability.
Barcelona, June 17, 2025 – Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts is taking part in the new European project Regenera4MED, a pioneering initiative aimed at transforming the Mediterranean tourism model to make it more resilient, conscious, and capable of regenerating its environment. The project, under the Sustainable Tourism Mission, is co-financed at 80% by the European Union’s Interreg Euro-MED Programme, with a duration of thirty-three months and a budget of over two million euros
Under the slogan “Towards a Mediterranean model of regenerative tourism”, Regenera4MED seeks to go beyond traditional sustainability by promoting practices that actively restore and enhance the environmental, cultural, and social values of highly touristic areas. This paradigm shift will be developed through six pilot regions: Catalonia, Liguria, Abruzzo, Crete, Corsica, and Split-Dalmatia.

Inaugural meeting in Barcelona with international participation
On June 17 and 18, 2025, the Catalan Tourist Board, the lead partner of the project, will host international project partners and associates for two days of working sessions focused on discussing the conceptual framework and initial steps of the project’s key tools. The event will begin with a keynote lecture by Anna Pollock, a recognized expert and pioneer in regenerative tourism. This will be followed by a co-creation workshop to provide tools for identifying regenerative experiences in the partner territories.
Throughout the two-day event, related European initiatives will also be presented, such as the Interreg Sustainable Tourism Community and the MED4REGEN project.
New tools and practices for regenerative tourism
Among the expected outcomes of this new project, Regenera4MED will develop new regenerative experiences aimed at leaving a positive impact on the territory, as well as an innovative tool called RISET for the self-assessment of tourism experiences, and the Regenera4MED Blueprint—a set of resources to ensure the scalability of the project’s results to other Mediterranean areas, aligned with the existing outputs of the thematic community.
Until the first quarter of 2028, ten partners will collaborate to develop this new model of regenerative tourism in the Mediterranean: the Italian regions of Liguria and Abruzzo, Crete, the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the University of the Peloponnese, the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions, the consultancy B. Link Barcelona Strategic Projects, and the tourism agencies of Catalonia, Corsica and Split-Dalmatia.
